Our next quarterly installment continues featuring the TPP customer success stories. With a focus on PCN management, another successful customer has transformed the TPP Alert services. What began as a service specific to a single sight location has evolved over several years into a fully integrated corporate global solution for PCN management.

We always welcome feedback from you! If you would like to share your story, please feel free to submit it to cs@totalpartsplus.com. As we continue to highlight how TPP has helped our customers in their everyday processes, we would love to hear how your company has achieved its internal goals, whether it concerns obsolescence management, PCN services, and/or environmental compliance.

As 2009 draws to a close, we would like to wish you a Happy Holiday season!

With the ever changing landscape of the semiconductor manufacturing industry, electronics suppliers face an unprecedented number of challenges in their production processes. These changes can include plant openings and closings, sudden raw material changes and substitutions, constantly improving technologies and processes, and increasing environmental compliance regulations both domestic and abroad. These changes force manufacturers to release hundreds of product change notices and End-of-Life announcements everyday, and any number of these notifications can have serious consequences for OEM products.

The impact of PCNs and EOL notices upon customers is vast and unpredictable. Missing a critical PCN or EOL notice can result in shipment delays, unfulfilled orders, and even assembly line shutdowns. An insufficient or suddenly unqualified supply of components can result in massive additional costs while products are redesigned, unexpected lifetime buys are negotiated, or substitutions are hunted down and re-qualified. Awareness is the key to preventing avoidable costs from piling up.

One leader in fixed, mobile and converged broadband networking, IP technologies, applications and services identified this critical concern and established a relationship that began as a single site solution for Obsolescence and PCNs to a global integration for PCN management. Services for this major telecommunications company encompass automated distribution of PCNs received from all sites corporate wide to the TPP PCN team for filtering, processing, AVL impact assessment and weekly deliveries.

The service begins with developing an auto-forward system of all PCNs received by the customer at all sites and divisions to the Total Parts Plus PCN mailbox. The dedicated TPP PCN team manually reviews each and every notification. PCNs are scrutinized and filtered to eliminate duplicates and determine true change notices or end of life notices. This step is critical to purge redundancy of notices to multiple site and exchanges between sites. In addition, it reduced time wasted evaluating messages that were not true change notices.

Once this evaluation is complete, the process of loading the PCN begins. First TPP categorizes the PCN into type of notice, such as product alert, materials change, retraction, etc. Next, the level of severity is assessed and assigned based on type. Product lines and part numbers are compiled and documented by the affected change and critical implementation or Lifetime Buy dates are detailed and submitted for a quality review. Upon approval the PCN is incorporated into the respective TPP databases and published accordingly.

The last phase of this custom service entails evaluation of the PCNs processed and respective impact on the corporate AVL. This custom service downloads of the corporate AVL for every division on a weekly basis for PCN assessment. Using custom software developed to accommodate the weekly AVL changes, PCNs processed during that week are cross referenced to the AVL and the delivery is compiled with a full summary.

Managing PCNs and EOL notices in-house can be time-consuming, expensive and can be very difficult to implement adequately. With a relationship established in 2000 and over the course of the past decade, Total Parts Plus has provided this global leader of telecommunication products and services an effective proactive process for obsolescence and PCN management.

Did you know that Total Parts Plus has overhauled the PCN/PDN Alert Service?

Users will now receive Alert emails daily whenever TPP receives a product change notification affecting any parts loaded in their account. The emails now display the notification number, PCN type, and the manufacturer’s name who released the notice, along with a text file that contains more detailed information with respect to the user’s affected parts and Bills of Materials.

A link on the Alert email navigates users to the application, where they are able to see the “new-look” Product Change Notifications screen, which defaults to show all notifications affecting the account for the past seven days. Users have the flexibility to focus on critical PCNs by selecting a specific PCN type to view, and can also search previous dates for past notices affecting the account.

In addition, the PCN report is now downloadable in Excel.
